Keep track of what is left
Most unused value is simply forgotten. After each purchase, note the remaining amount in your phone or snap a photo of the card and receipt. A short habit like this saves you from guessing at the register.
Read the terms once
Look for an expiration date and any fees that apply when a card sits unused for a long time. Write the date in your calendar if it is close, so you have time to spend the money before it changes.
Use it when prices drop
Sales seasons stretch a gift card further. Holding the card for a seasonal sale or an end-of-season clearance means the same balance buys more. Just do not wait so long that you miss an expiry date.
Handle small leftovers
- Pay part of a purchase with the card and the rest with another method to empty it completely.
- Add a small remaining balance to a store account if the retailer allows it.
- Pass a balance you will not use to a friend, or ask whether a local charity accepts it.
Keep the card after returns
Refunds for items bought with a gift card often go back onto that same card. Hold on to it until you are sure you will not return anything, and ask the store about alternatives if the card is gone.
