Why cards need activation
Many gift cards are inactive when you pick them up, which protects the money if the card is lost or stolen before purchase. Activation tells the issuer the card is now in the hands of its real owner and can be used in stores and online.
How to activate your card
- Check that the card is undamaged and the packaging was sealed.
- Open the activation page with the button above.
- Enter the card number, expiration date and security code from your card.
- Follow any extra prompts, then wait for the confirmation message.
Once activation is confirmed, check your balance to be sure the full amount is available.
Giving or receiving a card as a present
If you are the giver, keep the receipt until the recipient has confirmed the card works. If you are the one receiving it, activate and check the card soon after the occasion so any issue can be fixed while the purchase is still recent.
Tips for a smooth start
Sign the back of the card if there is a signature strip, since some stores ask for it. Keep the receipt or packaging until you have used the card once. If activation fails twice, stop and call the number on the back rather than trying many times, which can lock the card.
