Two ways to give the same gift
A digital gift card travels by email or text and can arrive within moments. A physical card is a real object you can wrap, tuck into a greeting card or hand over in person. The value is identical, so the decision is mostly about timing, presentation and the habits of the person you are shopping for.
When digital is the better pick
- You are shopping at the last minute and need the gift to arrive today.
- The recipient lives far away, so shipping would take too long.
- The person is comfortable with phones and email and keeps cards in a mobile wallet.
- You prefer to avoid plastic and packaging.
Digital cards are also hard to misplace, because they stay in an inbox or wallet instead of a drawer.
When a physical card works better
- You want something to unwrap on a birthday or holiday morning.
- The recipient does not use email often or prefers to pay with a plastic card.
- You plan to add a handwritten note or a small extra gift.
Older relatives in particular often feel more at ease holding a card they can hand to a cashier.
After you choose
Whichever type you pick, the same two steps follow. Physical cards usually need to be switched on, so see the card activation page. Then keep an eye on what is left by visiting the balance check page.
